RefWorks Citation Management Tutorial

Instruction on how to create your RefWorks account, save citations to RefWorks, and create a reference list/bibliography using RefWorks.

Adding Citations to Refworks by Direct Import

Some online resources, including LibrarySearch, allow for export of citations directly into RefWorks. 

To export a citation directly into RefWorks from LibrarySearch:

1) Click on the article title you want to save the citation for on the search results screen to be taken to the detailed record for the article.


 

2) Once on the detailed record for the article, click on Export found on the right side of the page under Tools.


 

3) Next, select 


 

4) If you have not yet logged in to RefWorks, you will now be asked to log in.


 

5) Click on the X in the upper right corner of the Import References screen to close the prompt.

 

The new citation has now been added to your RefWorks account.

 

Setting up Google Scholar to save citations to RefWorks

You can also save citations from Google Scholar to RefWorks using Direct Import; however a few extra sets are required to set up Google Scholar to activate this functionality . 

To set up Google Scholar to save ciations directly to RefWorks:

1) Click on the Settings at the top of the Google Scholar website.


 

2) Select "Show links to import citations into:" under Bibliography manager and Select RefWorks from the  pull down menu to the right.


 

3) Click Save.



After completing the above configuration process, you can save citations to RefWorks from Google Scholar by:

1) Click on "Import into RefWorks" for the citation you would like to save to RefWorks. 


 

2) If you have not yet logged in to RefWorks, you will now be asked to log in.


 

3) Click on the X in the upper right corner of theImport References screen to close the prompt.

The new citation has now been added to your RefWorks account.
