This is a companion guide to the Introduction to Literature Searching Lecture.

Introduction to PubMed

PubMed is a database that includes over 23 million biomedical citations covering the life sciences, behavioral sciences, chemical sciences, and bioengineering. Abstracts and full text are provided by journal publishers and PubMed Central, a database of articles funded by the National Institute of Health. Full text from journals our libary subscribes to can be accessed by clicking the Find it @RFUMS link found on the article's abstract page.

This guide includes the following information on PubMed:

  • A tutorial on how to perform basic searches in PubMed, learn more about a citation, and connect to the full text of an article.
  • How to use PubMed's filters to focus your search.
  • How to use PubMed's features to manage the citations found in your search results.
  •  An overview of finding the right PubMed medical subject heading and using it to achieve better search results.
  • Find contact information for our librarians and ask them questions.
