The Boxer Library has offered many different types of sessions in the past. Our sessions are typically 30-60 minutes and can be adapted to your classes' needs. Some examples of sessions we can offer include:
Getting to Know the Boxer Library
Maybe it is your first time using our library or perhaps you just need a refresher. There are a lot of resources and services available through the Boxer Library, but we are here to make sure that things don't get too overwhelming. In this session we will go over how to access some of our most popular resources such as full text articles, databases, ebooks, journals, and print materials. Additionally we will show you how to access services that can support your research and help answer any other questions you may have.
Search Strategies Pt. I
Are you getting started on their research for a specific assignment or topic? Our search strategies workshop can help students find the specific resources they need for an upcoming class project. This workshop can be tailored to focus on a select database(s). Students will learn how to use basic subject headings, Connectors/Boolean operators, and how to filter their results.
Search Strategies Pt. II
Are you already comfortable with locating our library resources but are having trouble getting the exact search results you need? In this session we will talk about strategies for refining your research topic, using subject term databases, and keeping a search journal.
Managing Your Citations With Refworks
Keeping all of your citations together can be overwhelming at times, especially when you have a big research project you are working on. That is where a citation manager can help you out! In this session we will be covering how to get started with RefWorks, a web based citation management software. We will explain how to set up an account, change citation styles, share folders, install helpful plugins, and more!
Copyright for Healthcare Professionals
Are you curious about what rights you have the creator of an original work? Do you have a big presentation coming up and want to know if a material you want to include is fair use? Maybe you just want to know how our country’s copyright laws may affect the work you do as a healthcare professional. In this session we will give you a brief history of copyright, go over what is and is not protected by copyright law, explain what “fair use” is, and give you some of the tools you need to approach your research with copyright in mind.
Critical Appraisal
Finding a resource that looks like it matches your research question is half the battle, but how can we tell if an article is a quality study? In this interactive workshop we will work with students to show them how they can quickly dissect an article for information and analyze it for merit.
Learn to Cite with AMA OR Learn to Cite with APA
In these sessions we will teach you how to create citations according to current AMA or APA guidelines. In these sessions we will give you a quick background on the citation style, direct you to helpful resources, and give you time to practice and ask questions.
