Embase

Embase is a database of biomedical literature. It focuses on drugs/pharmacology, medical devices, and clinical medicine. The database contains over 32 million records from over 8,500 published journals; Embase contains over six million records and over 2,700 journals not included in MEDLINE. Embase also indexes abstracts for over 1,000 conferences.

Best used for:

  • Complementing MEDLINE searches on biomedical topics
  • Finding information on drug and pharmacy topics
  • Searching for conference abstracts

Emtree

Embase uses a controlled vocabulary of subject headings called Emtree. These are biomedical terms that organize the information in Embase so it is more easily searched.

Emtree is similar to MeSH, or Medical Subject Headings, which is how information is organized in MEDLINE.
