What is a DOI?

DOI stands for digital object identifier, and it helps people find an article simply based on a number.

  • URLs and database coverage change frequently, but a DOI, once assigned, will not change. DOI’s are a way to connect the electronic article to its original source.
  • If you have a DOI, you do not have to put the URL into your citation.

Where to Find the DOI

An article's DOI can usually be located on the first page in the header or the footer. Please note that not every article has a DOI.
